Passwords

– Do not reuse passwords for different services.

– Use complex passwords.

– Consider using a password manager.

– Use multi factor authentication wherever possible as an extra layer of security.

Phishing Emails

– Always be on the lookout for fraudulent emails.

– Do not log other into accounts from links from emails. Go to the website directly.

Backups

– Backup anything you can’t afford to lose.

USB sticks

– If you have to use USB, format and scan it before using.

Patching

– Patch your devices, make sure software is up to date as much as possible.

Encryption (for data at rest)

– Encrypt your hard drives wherever possible with a tool like Bitlocker.

Physical Security

– Make sure you store your hardware in a safe space. Thieves can strike anywhere, anytime.

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)

– Before signing up for services, make sure they comply with GDPR laws.

– If you yourself need to process Personally Identifiable Information (PII) then make sure you understand GDPR and are compliant.

HTTPS

– When browsing websites, look for https in the website URL and lookout for the green padlock or padlock.

Cloud environments

– When you are storing your data on cloud environments, read and make sure you understand the terms and conditions.

Public WiFi

– Avoid where possible. If you need to use it, consider a VPN.

VPN

– Use a VPN when you are unsure of the public network you are connected to.

Antivirus

– Use an Antivirus and keep it patched and up to date.
